Google’s Nexus One Event: What to Expect
We’re less than 24 hours away from Google’s special event on Tuesday morning, when the company is expected to launch a Google-branded superphone, the Nexus One. But according to recent reports, this GSM-based device is just another smartphone that can only boast a few slight improvements over other Android devices already out there such as Motorola’s Droid.

Where to find GPS related Applications for Symbian 60 3rd Edition Phones?

I Recently bought Nokia N95 (S60 3rd Edition Phone)

I Need some GPS / GIS related applications for my cell phone

There is an app store on your phone, just look for the Download! icon. Alternatively go to http://download.nokia.com, http://www.handango.com or … Google.

Top mobile phone moguls’ state that there is no precise definition of a smartphone and agree that with the industry developing so fast, what we call a smartphone now may be very different in a year’s time.

In 1992 IBM produced arguably the first ever smartphone. As a blue sky campaign they created Simon, a concept product exhibited at the Las Vegas trade show Comdex. Simon pre-emanated every Blackberry, iPhone and Android you see now, by boasting a plethora of features including email, fax, world clock, calendar, calculator, address book and even a touch screen. However it did, rather unfashionably resemble a brick.

The next attempt was in 1996 by Nokia with their mobile device called the Communicator. Other than sounding like a bad 80s sci-fi villain, the Nokia Communicator 9210 model was the first smartphone with an open operating system. Unfortunately the astronomically expensive price bracket alienated the majority of the general public who were limited by their more modest salaries. After this the idea of third party applications was introduced, when in 2001 Handspring released the Palm OS Treo which also featured wireless web browsing, email and contact organiser.

A year later the company Research in Motion launched the original Blackberry and it was at this point that the smartphone reached a wider market. It was still confined to business executives that wanted to take their office everywhere with them, however for the first time there was a mobile device that was optimised for wireless email use and it was this model that set the trend for the rest of the smartphones.

In 2007 Apple released the iPhone, with its intuitive touch screen this was the device that revolutionised mobile web browsing. It was easy to use, enjoyable to navigate with and looked far sexier than all its predecessors. In 2008 the Apple application store was launched for both fee and free apps downloadable to your iPhone handset. Now the store has more than 50,000 applications and well over 1 billion downloads.

Following in Apples popular footsteps all other major smartphone providers will be opening their own app stores, so expect lots from Microsoft, Nokia and Palm. Research in Motion recently opened its first app store called the Blackberry App World. Whether these do as well as Apple is yet to be seen, but with the high level of competition between the major players, we can look forward to some exciting smartphone innovation in the coming years.

Engadget says Google’s Nexus One is no iPhone killer
An Engadget.com review of Google’s upcoming Nexus One smartphone found that it’s ‘not really very different’ from Motorola’s Droid technology.

The term GSM means – Global System for Mobile Communications. It is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. GSM differs significantly from its predecessors in that both signaling and speech channels are Digital call quality, which means that it is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. GSM is an open standard which is currently developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

From the point of view of the consumer, the key advantage of GSM systems has been higher digital voice quality and low cost alternatives to making calls such as text messaging. The advantage for network operators has been the ability to deploy equipment from different vendors because the open standard allows easy inter-operability. Like other cellular standards GSM allows network operators to offer roaming services which mean subscribers can use their phones all over the world.

To help you further understand, GSM is simply a standard used by phones to communicate with each other. It is a new standard that has been adopted to all new models of phones and is now so prevailant that it has become the ‘norm’ in the phone world.

Now to answer your other question, with respect to locked and unlocked phones. A phone is locked when it is attached to network. For example if you go to AT&T and purchase a phone from them then that phone is said to be locked unto the AT&T network and as such it cannot work on another network such as SPRINT or NEXTEL. Thus an unlocked phone is a phone that is bought, that is not locked to any network. And as such it can work on any network.

The network it will lock unto will depend on the SIM card you put into the phone. For example if you put a AT&T sim in an unlocked phone then it will work on the AT&T network. In the same way if you put a NEXTEL SIM card in an unlocked phone then it will work on the NEXTEL network.

However if the phone is locked to a particular network, like say for example AT&T then changing the SIM card in the phone to another SIM card from another network such as NEXTEL will not work. This is because the phone is locked unto to AT&T network and as such will not work on any other network.

Yes, you can use the prepaid SIM card on the phone once the phone is either unlocked or on the same network as the SIM card you are going to put into it. It should work just fine.

The iPhone 3GS is pretty awesome when it comes straight out of the box. What’s even better, though, is an unlocked iPhone 3GS. Imagine being able to connect to any network in the world. How about getting many apps, ranging from the 99 cent ones to more expensive ones, for free? You get that by unlocking your iPhone.

Benefits of an unlocked iPhone 3GS go far past free apps. Unlocking allows full customization of most every aspect of the phone. You can get it customized however you want, something unseen in a factory setting phone. You can get rid of the standard AT&T SIM card and use a cheaper SIM card. That means lower rates. An unlocked iPhone 3GS also just means more freedom. And hey, what’s the cost? Not much, because you can revert your phone back if you don’t feel like you need the unlock.

The iPhone 3GS isn’t much different from the 3G in terms of specifications: 4.5 inches tall, 2.4 inches wide. It comes in both 16 gig and 32 gig, while the 3G now is limited to the 8 gig. The 3GS allows 12 hours of 2G talk, 9 hours of 3G talk, 300 hours of standby, 5 hours 3G Internet use, 9 hours wifi use, 10 hours video, and 30 hours audio. Of course, thats never combined, it’s one or the other on a single battery charge. If you’ve used the 3G before, don’t be too surprised when the 3GS isn’t much different on the technical portion; focus on the features for now.

Apple has made some decent improvements on prices for the two iPhones. While the newer version is released, the older version is dropped down to $99 for an 8 gig. White is no longer available, and the 16 gig version was cut as well. The 3GS is available at $199 for a 16 gig, and $299 for a 32 gig.

All three prices are good for “qualified customers”, which means that you buy a 2-year plan with AT&T in order to get that price. Ignore that, and you pay $400-$500 more with AT&T’s new options.
Overall, if you want a faster iPhone that has great apps (free if you unlock!) and ramped up features, the 3GS is just what you need. That is, if you want to drop the $720 for the contract (2 years, $30 per month) on top of the $200 for the phone, or just $400 for a phone that won’t allow you to make calls or anything. It’s worth the price. In the end, you’ll be able to download more than $720 worth in information when you compare to the rates of other carriers.

You can get the lowest prices on the unlocked iPhone 3Gs at our online price comparison site Cell Phones For Sale.
